Default okay I had to come back..

To elaborate on what I mean when I say beauty can be a curse.
The lengths people who become consumed by it go to in order to (try &) maintain it

As well as all the other botched ops that everyone knows of via media. (Wildenstein etc)

Once they've had it they can't let it go,but nature insists--they must!

I'd rather be dead than stupid, no matter what I looked like. Maybe it would be different if I didn't know I was stupid.

That said, I think intelligence is a bigger curse than beauty. There are days when I think I'll need a frontal lobotomy to be able to get along in this world.

Didn't you people ever watch Nip/Tuck?

Beauty is a curse on the world, it keeps us from seeing who the real monsters are

I missed this earlier, but I concur. Most of the friends I have, that have serious "mental health/depression" issues, are extremely intelligent. I truly believe that there's a correlation between the two...between "not being able to stop processing/worrying", and the rest of us, who can just say f*ck it, and let it go. I'm sure that other factors are involved as well, but...again, I've just always noticed that my "troubled" friends are always very intelligent.

Attractiveness has A LOT to do with self-confidence. So, at the end of the day, i think everything comes down to what's in your head, not on your face.

My 1st thought on hearing of that dating website was of the computer dating application scene in Harold and Maude, where the awful mother says it's obviously a company with high standards because they screen out the ugly. Somehow not as funny in real life.

This is an interesting discussion; here's my two cents.

My two sisters are very beautiful - yet both of them struggle with eating disorders and never truly feel pretty, no matter how many times you tell them they are. However, since they place so much value on looks and equate "thinner" with "prettier", they wind up hurting themselves. One of them is still in treatment - and she's a bombshell. I'm not just saying that. She was once approached by a modeling agency.

Then, there's me - the "ugly duckling" of the family. My entire life, I've been "the smart one." I'm not repulsive-looking; I'd call my looks "average." Still, I recognize I am not beautiful in the traditional sense - certainly not in comparison to my sisters.

Have I wanted to look better? Yes. Have I made concerted efforts to look better? Yes. Do I like it when people tell me I look good? Yes. I do value beauty and want to be perceived as attractive. Ideally, I'd be both smart AND beautiful - and there are plenty of people out there who are both smart and intelligent.

However, valuing beauty over intelligence? Not so much. I would never give up my brains for looks. Perhaps that's why I'm the only one of my family who hasn't had an eating disorder. I know how to value myself in a way that does not depend on pleasing others.

Since the concept of beauty is defined by society, those who value it above intelligence are by definition more dependent on external reinforcement from others to determine their self-worth. I'd rather not depend on others for personal validation.

If someone tells me that I'm worse off being smart instead of beautiful, well, all I can do is thank God I don't share that opinion or I'd spend the rest of my life feeling like crap.

Sadly, many unattractive people do buy into that opinion, and many of them do spend their lives feeling like crap. It's not just unattractive people, either; as this thread demonstrates, many attractive people also buy into that opinion. Unfortunately, since looks inevitably fade, attractive people who define themselves by their looks are going to start having some problems.

Still, I don't begrudge attractive people for making the most of their looks while they can and feeling good about the way they look. There's nothing wrong with that. It's only when beauty becomes more important than anything else that it can lead to issues. My sisters have proven that to me.
