Default What book have you read lately or do you recommend?

I will start this off this thread by recommending a classic novel that everyone should read: Clan of the Cave Bear. This is a must read. A true classic that will have you turning pages so fast it will make your head spin.

http://www.amazon.com/Clan-Cave-Bear...0909837&sr=8-1

Amazon.com Review
When her parents are killed by an earthquake, 5-year-old Ayla wanders through the forest completely alone. Cold, hungry, and badly injured by a cave lion, the little girl is as good as gone until she is discovered by a group who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, have little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others." Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the middle of a brutal and dangerous power struggle.
Although Jean Auel obviously takes certain liberties with the actions and motivations of all our ancestors, her extensive research into the Ice Age does shine through--especially in the detailed knowledge of plants and natural remedies used by the medicine woman and passed down to Ayla. Mostly, though, this first in the series of four is a wonderful story of survival. Ayla's personal evolution is a compelling and relevant tale. --Sara Nickerson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The last series I read was The Hunger Games trilogy. If you haven't already you must read them.

Before that, I read How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran and Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Both worth a read!

The Hunger Games are simply brilliant. Reading them royally messed up my sleep cycle for about a fortnight cause I read them all in 4 nights of staying awake till I literally fell asleep with exhaustion

Also, The Other Boleyn Girl. I was absolutely captivated, it's an absolutely brilliant book and it's a fascinating insight into one of the most controversial Queen Consorts in British History.

I'm ordering the first Hunger Games Book. It is on my list after The Wolf's Gift by Anne Rice. I'm very intrigued by the premise and I would like to read it before the movie comes out.

I need to read The Hunger Games. I've heard GREAT things about them.... plus, Jennifer Lawrence went to my high school and we went to homecoming in the same group one year.

Agreed. Even if you don't think a young adult book series about a post-apocolyptic U.S. where children fight to the death in an annual televised event is your thing. Because I assumed it wasn't for me, but it's so damn GOOD!

This is on my to-read list, though I've heard it's very sad.

Love this book.

I'm currently reading Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions by Gloria Steinem. The essay about her mother moved me to tears.

Also finished Anne Tyler's Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. A great read with really compelling characters.

Love this book.
1) It really wasn't that sad. Like, not maudlin or heart-wrenching or anything like that. It was well done. Please do read it.

2) I loved it so much more than Kite Runner (which was also a great book, but Thousand Splendid Suns just slayed me.)

One day by David Nicholls. I read this a while back and re visit every now and again because I strangely sometimes miss one of the main characters.. Emma Morely. Which sounds weird I know but I really related to her. The film is also pretty good although it does miss a lot out from the book. Anne Hathawawy got a lot of stick for her change in accent throughout the film but people who have read the book know that Emma's accent often changed throughout.

Another brilliant one is never let me go, again the film is great but the book is in another totally different league. It's beautifully written (I don't think I have ever cried so much at a book) again the characters are wonderfully complex. I couldn't put it down.

I'm reading a book now on Wallis Simpson called "That Woman" By Anne Sebba. So far i'm enjoying it, I like how the author is humanising Wallis, people often write about her as if she wasn't quite real, as if she was sort of a dragon lady but so far she has really delved into her her life, her childhood and why she was the woman she was. Interesting stuff.

I am currently reading Sonny Barger's (Hell's Angel) autobiography. Not exactly a classic, but did make it onto the best seller list when it came out.
