Bittersweet: ten of the creepiest love songs By WITH JIM HAYES Tuesday February 07 2012 NEXT Tuesday is Valentines Day and that means the usual rush of love song compilation albums. But not every love song is what it appears, and some are downright sinister. Here's an alternative Valentine's playlist of our top ten creepiest love songs ever... EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - THE POLICE If your partner suggests this as the first dance song of your upcoming wedding, run. An ode to obsession, this is the ultimate stalker song. 'I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle, little love song,' says Sting, and he should know. HELLO - LIONEL RICHIE On the surface, a straightforward love song. But if someone you never met whispered in your ear that 'in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times' you would be just a little uncomfortable. And hello, what about that video? She's a blind student, and he's her teacher, for God's sake. I WANT YOU - ELVIS COSTELLO To say that this ballad from the 'Blood and Chocolate' album is intense is an understatement. A jealousy-consumed Costello repeats the 'I Want You' line at least thirty times. Creepy. SILVER SPRINGS - FLEETWOOD MAC Singer Stevie Nicks wrote this after her break-up with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. 'I'll follow you down ' til the sound of my voice will haunt you. You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you,' sings Nicks who probably wasn't handling the break-up too well at the time. SOMEBODY - DEPECHE MODE Over a kind of unsettling heartbeat rhythm, Martin Gore tells us all about the caring, listening type of girl he wants, before ruining it all at the end, with the lines: ' Though things like this make me sick/in a case like this I'll get away with it'. Sweet. ALL MINE - PORTISHEAD 'All mine...you have to be' sings Portishead's Beth Gibbons in this song of desire which takes on a menacing tone in the lines: 'Make no mistake/you shan't escape/tethered and tied/ There's nowhere to hide from me'. Let's assume it's metaphorical. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE - THE BEATLES The fab four revealed a darker side in this threatening Lennon-penned track on 1965's 'Rubber Soul'. Lines like 'You better run for your life if you can, little girl' and 'Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl, Than to be with another man' probably ruined their boys-nextdoor image with mums and grans, permanently. INVISIBLE - CLAY AIKEN What would you do if you were invisible? We know what Clay Aiken would do. The runner-up in the second series of American Idol has a unique take on the chat-up line. 'If I was invisible/then I could just watch you in your room. If I were invincible/i'd make you mine tonight,' he sings. Does that do it for you, girls? HE HIT ME (IT FELT LIKE A KISS) - THE CRYSTALS Here's a Phil Spector-produced song you rarely hear on the radio, for obvious reasons. We'll let the lyrics speak for themselves: 'If he didn't care for me I could have never made him mad. But he hit me, and I was glad. Yes, he hit me, and it felt like a kiss. He hit me, and I knew I loved him.' WHERE THE WILD ROSES GROW - NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS, WITH KYLIE MINOGUE To sum up: man meets woman, gives her a rose and then bludgeons her to death with a rock. Why? Because 'all beauty must die'. Enough said. - WITH JIM HAYES |

But I love Silver Springs! But it is true. As soon as I saw the title of this thread I knew Every Breath You Take would be on here. Me and my friends joke about how creepy it is all the time.

I can understand why people would think it creepy. I was walking home once in the dark after class and listening to my iPod. The earphones were broken so I just used the inbuilt speakers. I guess walking behind somebody while playing that song isn't the best idea. I swear I thought you would have jumped into a hedge with fright :s

Too funny. I guess the haunting part is a little creepy.
Found this earlier about SS, had to share. I never thought this was a song about reconciliation... Lindsey: It’s like a great scene from a movie that gets cut and left on the cutting room floor. But it is…it’s a great song. Stevie: It’s like…the couple is back together!

^When is that quote from?
Interesting. I guess the first verse could be kind of positive/reconcilable, but the second verse completely shatters those hopes so I'm not getting it haha. Something is going over my head.
