Default Talk On The Town Says I Might Go Solo!

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I've never seen any mention of it. Does anyone think Stevie chose to cover "I Need To Know" as a snub towards Fleetwood Mac? I just find it kind of striking that it starts with "talk on the town says I might go solo!" and she started performing it on her first solo tour and almost every solo tour after that (she seemed to drop it by the TOSOTM yet she resurrected it again for Timespace, which was coincidentally after she left FM and didn't drop it again until recently!). Has she ever been asked as to why out of all the great Tom Petty songs, she chose to do INTK??

I wouldn't read anything into her selection of that song to perform on her first solo tour. I just think it was a fast-paced rocker that was needed amidst a set full of mid-tempo songs.

If anything, "Julia" is a real diss against Fleetwood Mac. Sure, she couches her true feelings within flowery, pretty-sounding words. But the sentiment is there: I can do this without all of you.

I thought the lyrics were actually, "Talk on the town says you might go solo"?

Well, either way, I never really read that much into it. I always just figured that since most of Bella Donna was kind of in the middle tempo wise, she needed something faster to play, and she liked the song!

Well, even so - it was the "talk on the town" but Stevie herself said she never intended or wanted to leave the band even if the talk was that she would. So, to me that line was a little dig at the gossipmongers if anything.

I think you answered your own question. Stevie's been performing that song on just about all her tours. Hence, she loves it. It's off the 1978 "You're Gonna Get It" album, which she used to say she practiced ballet to.

But then again the words of the song can sort of playfully be applied to Stevie's situation at the time, & I'm sure the thought more than occurred to her.

I think she changed it to "I" because it was applicable to her newfound solo career. I don't think it was meant to by a slight to Fleewood Mac. I it was just a song she liked, and that line happened to be in it.
