NJ has too. Just means that the governor can call upon the National Guard for assistance.

(CNN) -- Five governors declared states of emergency Thursday as Hurricane Irene threatened to wreak havoc along the United States' Eastern Seaboard.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley declared emergencies for their states, while North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency in counties east of Interstate 95. The emergency declarations allow states to free funds and prepare resources that may be needed.

If Irene continues along its current track, "from a flooding perspective, this could be a hundred-year event," Christie said. He encouraged voluntary evacuations to begin immediately. "Anybody who is on a barrier island should go," he said.

Christie said it was too soon to know whether there will be mandatory evacuations.

I just got back from the grocery store, which was crowded of course, and all the chatter was about Virginia being in a state of emergency! I don't think there is going to be a bottle of water or loaf of bread by tomorrow morning in the stores! Time will only tell what Irene may do! It may not be that bad...we'll see, and keep a path clear to get to Stevie and the light on!

fairydust 75 wishing you safe! I'm not far from the I-95 corridor here in Virginia!

It's supposed to be a Category 1 by the time it hits NY now...looked up what that menas...

CATEGORY 1 HURRICANE:
A tropical storm with winds of 39-73 mph becomes a hurricane when it's winds near the center reach 74 mph. The storm surge is generally 4-5 feet above normal. Damage is mostly to trees and shrubbery, with no real building damage. Average wind speed for a cat. 1 is 74-95mph. Minimum central pressure (980 mb.)

The new moon this weekend will wreak havoc with the tides.

Hurricane Irene: Path Goes Over New Jersey, New York, and Tides Could Worsen Floods

There is a new moon on Sunday evening -- and the storm track, as currently forecast by NOAA, will take Irene on Sunday over the major population centers around Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and into New England. A new moon means tides, shifting rhythmically, could be especially high during the daytime this weekend as the moon with its gravity passes overhead.

That could add to the 10-foot predicted storm surge -- the bulge of water a storm pushes out of its way as it churns over open ocean.

There is the potential for serious damage to New York as #Irene may make landfall over the city at high tide. Evacs in NYC have begun now. (Can anyone confirm? How many Ledgies do we have on the east coast?)

CBCAlerts CBC News Alerts
N.Y. mayor urges people to start fleeing Irene Friday . 6 states declare states of emergency #irene

"8 injured by rough ocean in Fla.
Irene could still strengthen a bit; up to 15 inches of rain estimated on East Coast.
Hundreds of thousands told to evacuate in N.C., Md., N.J., Va. areas.
NYC orders hospitals, nursing homes in low-lying areas to evacuate; further evacuations possible.
New York, Connecticut join N.C., Va., Md. and N.J. in declaring state of emergency.
Hurricane warning issued along all N.C. coast.

Widespread power outages are likely, and damage from storm surges, fallen trees and flooding could end up in the billions of dollars.
Irene's projected track was shifted a bit west, putting millions more people within the forecast "cone" issued by the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

New York City, Long Island, Atlantic City and Virginia Beach were among the areas now near the center of Irene's forecast path, along with even more areas of North Carolina, where Irene is expected to make a first landfall on Saturday near Ocracoke Island...

After hitting North Carolina, Irene is likely to weaken to a Category 2 as it moves Sunday into the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia coastal region and then on to New York. A Category 2 storm carries winds of 96 to 110 mph.
"Any further deviation left could bring direct impacts as far inland as the Washington-Baltimore area," National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read said."

You think the rest of the tour could be postponed?

I don't know what to say other than I'm sorry this is happening.

It looks like government officials in all the states that are in the path of Irene are really taking this very seriously, so even if the venue doesn't take a direct hit from the hurricane, they might be fearful of power outages, wind damage or tornado outbreaks inland.

Living in FL, cancellations due to even the threat of a hurricane are the norm here. I grew up in New England and it's very much like a Nor'easter warning where you stock up, hunker down and hope for the best. And like a Nor'easter, it's usually the storm surge that's the most destructive.

Here's a blurb from a travel site.

Irene-related flight cancellations piling up
Airlines have canceled close to 180 flights in advance of Hurricane Irene’s projected U.S. landfall and waived rebooking penalties and change fees, according to Bloomberg News.

American and American Eagle canceled 154 flights, a spokesperson said. JetBlue dropped 12; US Airways, eight; Delta, four; and United Continental, one.

Travelers booked for flights through Aug. 31 can rebook without penalty by Sept. 2, although the dates vary slightly by carrier and gateway city.

Irene currently is projected to arrive in Washington by Sunday morning. The storm could reach New York later that same day or early on Monday.

It depends on how bad the storm hits and where. Considering the remaining dates are in NY, NJ, MA and VA doesn't bode well. I can't imagine that they'd want to be trucking equipment around and trying to travel in all that. She might be able to make up some dates as this is the end of the tour. Or maybe they'll go off as planned.

They could delay the show a couple of weeks. But the venues are probably booked up with other artists.

I think in 24 hours you'll have a pretty clear picture of where this thing is headed, if it's going to fizzle out etc.

Apparently the cold northern water will help it die out...
