And this is why I became obsessed with this band. The harmonies were so tight. It’s a great selection of songs added to the tour supporting the release of 1975 self titled album. I have some great recordings of this tour…..

I remember recording this from a radio station that aired the King Biscuit Flower Hour sometime around 1983 or 1984. I thought as if I recorded a sasquatch in the woods. The joys of recording this on a cassette tape from the radio and carefully stopping and starting again between commercials. BTW, THIS is the tempo that Landslide is supposed to be played. Its gotten slower over the years. This tempo existed thru Mirage.

That ISA guitar intro was shorted, update, or even cut in later years. I don't know if Lindsey meant that when he told her daughter that the live performance evolved over time. Well if that was the point I agree, I didn't really like that much the original/mid 70s initial guitar notes. The solo at the end is another story; I've always loved them, from any year or tour.

For example, the 2004 Boston ISA, with an updated guitar intro with more of Mick's drums, I really like that one. Of course the guitar solo at the end is awesome too.

All live versions have something special. In 1976 Stevie singing back up was wonderful. In 1982 Christine was doing the honors while Stevie was backstage breathing steam to help her voice. Even the Buck/McVie tour version was spectacular. But without a doubt the best live version is the 1980 Live album recorded in Cleveland. Dear Lord. The intro is so powerful and Mick even hitting the gong. Christine's organ is the best ever and is so powerful. Everyone is high as f***. Mick is pounding the hell out of the drums. Chris's organ is way up. Lindsey is on fire that listening you swear at some points there are 2 guitarists. You think Lindsey is going to start smashing his guitar at the end. This is a good example of when Don Henley said cocaine does make you more creative in the beginning. This was right before it got out of control for a few members. Chris downing a bottle of champagne doing tons of blow and playing the hell out the organ. There is no other version quite like this one and thank goodness it was professionally recorded. IMHO this is the rawest version. No other version comes close. There is something about the sound of Lindsey's guitar on this song on this tour that is so different. Its much more electric.

Did they actually have Stevie breathing steam to help her voice, or is this a euphemism for what I had presumed she was doing backstage?

I have watched Stevie breathing steam backstage before a concert on a video tape, I have. Robin was close by, as she was her speech therapist at the time.

i hadn't heard that in a long time so i had a listen. wow. yeah they were sooo powerful there... amazing guitar and such an awesome, solid rhythm section backing him up. they were such a great band.

It was a joke of course but it was something she actually said. Believe it or not but a music reporter asked her a direct question "what do you do with going backstage so much" Her response was that she breathed steam to help her voice. We never knew steam came in powder form. She did use steam on the Tusk tour. But I don't think that was the main reason she was running back stage.

Yes thank goodness it was professionally recorded. Lindsey handles the song all by himself like he does today which really works. Its his total showcase. The sound of his guitar is a bit more electric than other tours which really works on the song. The Dance version is totally neutered like all the other songs. Mick wrote in his first book that the Tusk tour was something like a mixed bag. Some nights they were off and some nights they were tight as a tick. This is from one of those nights. The drugs were facilitating the performance not hindering it. Mick also said that the nights they were tight on the tour were the best that the band ever played. I am not crazy about GYOW from this night but ISA broke all barriers that night. Chris and John and Mick playing like crazy keeping up with Lindsey. Is this the last tour of Christine's organ or keyboard sounding organ. That got toned down with technology in the live performance.
Again, it makes me sad that he does not remember what the song is about and alluded it was about his break up with Stevie which did not happen until years after it was written. Maybe it was a premonition

I agree. The only thing that comes close is the Mirage version 1982 HBO special. And Christine's vocals on the tune, serve the song so much better than Stevie's, in my opinion.

This is the explosive FM that I remember. So damn good!

I had never read or seen about the steam story. I just read steam can be beneficial in keeping the vocal folds hydrated and soothing any irritation, as the warm, moist air helps to maintain mucosal moisture. So it makes sense on Stevie. Anyway, it would be funny to see that video.

Back to the joke, what I do remember is Mick breathing through an "oxygen???" mask in the Mirage concert video. He even put the mask on his ear for a second . He wrote he suffered hypoglycemia and required "nursing from Dennis all night" during the Tusk tour, but he didn't mention any need of extra oxygen. So I wonder if anyone ever analyzed the contents of the tank.

Once upon a time on the Rumours tour she was breathing steam backstage as a treatment for her voice (I believe it's on the Rosebud film). Robin was there and Stevie referred to her as her "speech therapist" which was just Stevie hyperbole and actually insulting to REAL speech therapists who go thru years of training and licensure. But dramatic Stevie.

I'm always amazed at fans who see them do something once decades ago and create a whole narrative out of it for years and years. No idea how long she kept doing the steam thing, but she clearly moved on to having REAL speech therapy and her voice coach and all that because her home made remedies like steam did not do her any real good. At one point in the 70s/early 80s she mentioned she was getting shots (not uncommon in those days, not sure how much they still do that) of steroids or some such that would reduce the swelling of the overworked vocal cords (which was terrible because then you went out and sang on them when they were already damaged and so just did more damage). She was also diagnosed (in the 70s) with nodules on her vocal cords... bumps that don't go away from too much singing/use of them. Her speaking voice was a real mess for a long time too. People don't recall how many shows they had to cancel/postpone because of her voice. I watched a documentary on youtube once where these interviewers had a bunch of road crew folks they interviewed. One was Ray Lindsey. He talked about the early FM shows and how HORRIBLE her voice was and how upset she was and how the band and crew really really worried she would not be able to hold up on tour. (If you notice she really changed how she sang onstage at some point, and didn't try to sing the way she did on records as much when she was performing live).

I agree that her saying that's why she left the stage so much is hilarious obvious bs. She's talked about her coke habit and how it got to where she was doing it like every 20 mins. So....."steam" ....
