Rumours was best selling rock album of 2024

The top of the Billboard chart has been dominated by pop, country, and hip-hop throughout 2024 and beyond. You have to dig deep on Billboard’s year-end best-selling albums list to find the first rock record, and when you do it’s a classic album released 47 years ago. Fleetwood Mac’s 21x-platinum 1977 album, Rumours, is the highest-charting rock record of 2024, coming in at No. 34 on Billboard’s year-end list of the top-selling records of the last 12 months. Only 29 of the Top 200 albums on Billboard’s 2024 year-end chart were from rock acts, and none of them were released this year. All but five of those 29 best-selling rock records were greatest hits collections. Besides Rumours, the only non-compilation rock albums to make the chart were Nirvana‘s Nevermind at No. 93, AC/DC‘s Back in Black at No. 162, Linkin Park‘s Hybrid Theory at No. 180, and Sublime‘s self-titled 1996 album at No. 197. I can identify jazz, blues, country, easily. But is there a formal, technical definition of pop and rock genres (and bands), I mean based in their differences? I just googled and AI showed

In 1977 Fleetwood Mac was definitely considered a rock band. Yes they had pop commercial success but they were on all the rock stations as were The Eagles, Journey, etc.
Tusk sort of muddied the waters with the band retreating from rock and some would say even pop. Tusk is folksy and has a little edge to it. Mirage and Tango are full mainstream pop. Classic rock stations mostly play only the White album and Rumours. Many music critics will say the Mac abandoned their rock roots for mainstream pop post Rumours or Tusk. However they maintained their rock chops for live shows.
Long story short, I think its fair to consider Rumours a rock album especially for 1977 when Disco ruled the charts. In early 1977 when Rumours knocked Hotel California from the top spot was the peak of greatness of the 1970s. It was right before Saturday Night Fever was released.
