Tame Impala - That's All for Everyone

In what's turning out to be the Summer of Fleetwood Mac, we've had indie starlets like Best Coast, New Pornographers, MGMT, and others tackle Mac songs for the upcoming tribute album Just Tell Me That You Want Me, out August 14 via Hear Music/Concord. And while we wait for the actual band to reunite and tour next year, Aussie psychedelic warriors Tame Impala give us their treatment of "That's All For Everyone."

Most of the aforementioned covers have hewn closer to the pop side of the band's '70s sound, but Tame Impala pick up their weirder strains. The original is an atmospheric Lindsey Buckingham composition, appearing on the group's 1979 double-LP Tusk, and Tame Impala take that format and blast off. There's actually a little bit of that melody and sound in the group's latest single, which means Fleetwood Mac can still inspire a new generation thirty years down the road. Hear Tame Impala's Feverish Cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'That's All For Everyone'

It's no secret current SPIN cover costar Bethany Cosentino is a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, a fact she easily confirmed by providing us with a jouncy take on "Rhiannon." She covered the classic as part of the forthcoming Mac tribute compilation, Tell Me That You Want Me, due August 14 (Hear Music/Concord). Cosentino's approach was a departure from the original as well as a break from the carefully sanded pop for which she's now known — one could hear only traces of Stevie Nicks or Best Coast in the mix. This is not at all the case in Tame Impala's rendition of "That's All For Everyone," a fever dream from 1979's Tusk that's been made even more feverish for the comp. Here, the Aussie psych-rock outfit swap acoustic guitar for melting synths and send Lindsey Buckingham's tune through a battery of effects. Echoes abound but it's a cover that's faithful in both directions. Hear it exclusively:

First of all, I really like Tame Impala. On this cover, they really didn't add something beefy to the song, otherwise than making the song completely their own. On the other hand, one can also say that Lindsey already recorded a Tame Impala song in 1979.

i always considered That's All For Everyone Lindsey's weakest song on Tusk. so keeping that in mind, i think this version slightly improved the song... vocals or something sound somewhat Lennon-esque to me, and i can actually stand to listen to it.

While it’s always sort of Fleetwood Mac appreciation week in the indie sphere, this has been a particularly robust one: We got the news of the band’s impending reunion tour, we got the particularly excellent, Balearic take on “Straight Back” by Washed Out from the indie-rock all-star salute LP Just Tell Me That You Want Me, **** just last night Best Coast covered “Storms” on Fallon. Now on the back of that landslide of Mac activity — and yes that is the second time I’ve made a Mac/”Landslide” joke on this site this week because I’ve been afraid of changing — we get one more from Just Tell Me: Tame Impala extracting the psychedelic roots of Tusk‘s Lindsey Buckingham mindmelter “That’s All For Everyone” and brewing them into a flangey, panoptic pupil-dilator. This is good casting.
