Shelton 2011 -
Lindsey telling security guy to f**k off in the middle of the solo... there was also a version from last year somewhere towards the end of the 4th leg of the OMS tour when he tapped security guy who was trying to keep people away from the stage on the head in the middle of singing - i'm sure someone knows where that is... also, not because it was a great version (none of the 2012 OMS were because this song does need a band), but because it was just such a love fest and so much fun, guitar strumming from Chicago 2012 - you asked for personal favorites... ![]()

That top '77 one is my favorite, I guess I'm too much of a purist about this song and don't need a lot more than what's on the track. It's probably not the best guitar solo of all but that's not why I love the song. Lindsey has more fun on Tusk and Mirage and that's fun to watch, plus everyone looks real cute on Mirage (except Mick, Mick just looks crazy). But the more fun it gets the less devastating the song feels and that's how I like it best, especially on that amazing chorus. Earlier on, I guess when Lindsey was still reeling from the breakup, his vocals sound more tortured. I also like the faster pace and the ending, I don't think they ended the song on that minor chord most of the time. I'm also a sucker for Stevie's death glares.
I could never figure out what Stevie (and Christine?) says at 3:00 though? It sounds like "only love" to me but I don't think that's right. It isn't the same without Christine. I understand why they slow it down later as well, but it's not as amazing for me. One thing I do like about the later tours (Dance, and I think SYW?) is Stevie harmonizing on "shacking up's all you wanna do". I'd never heard the one man version before, I'm not sure I dig it especially but that is a killer solo. Plus it's hard for me to dislike this song. |

musically, the LB/LBT crossroads version was really great and fresh (unlike the Carrie Underwood version!) but it does not play on CMT site anymore, and CMT seems to be worse than NBC about taking stuff off youtube. maybe it's posted at one of the other video channels?

1977- mostly because Stevie's expressions are priceless-the pouting at the beginning and the smile after the turn.

I'm a big sucker for the '77 version and the Tusk version, they're both priceless.

I have no personal favorite, but I absolutely can not stand the one with Carrie Underwood. It doesn't sound right nor good to me.

anyway...like the GDW in SN thread, I believe this song gets better with age and performance. I have no fave, theay all are, but if I had to pick one...it would be the 77 raw emotional version. |

Right, this is difficult... I like most of those performances for different reasons....
So, if I were to construct the ideal live version.... It would have the vocals from the 1977 Vh1 appearance, the guitar solo from the 1980 Live album, the guitar tone for the solo from the Dance, and the extended outro from live in Japan. |
