So everytime I watch the Tusk Documentary I wonder if they edited in the audience cheers in for the live performances. On Sisters of the Moon especially, the audience goes totally apesh!t anytime Stevie even raises her voice lol. Were those audience shots and cheers edited in, or did the band really elicit that kind of response from crowds in the late '70s?

yeah, they dubbed they audience sound (not sure is "dubbing" if the right word but they did some thing to make the audience sound louder)

Actually it's done with the lighting crew. Whenever they shine very bright light on the audience we screamed louder because then the band could see everyone in the room. In that part of SOTM it's real dark in the room and Stevie is singing and at the same moment she throws her arm up in the air to sing louder the bright light flashes a few times on the audience, again making us go more nuts, collectively thinking that all of a sudden she'll be able to see all of us wherever we are in the arena. But it's the lights that makes us respond louder, IMO. Also remember when those many white lights scanned over the crowd during another song on the Tusk doc? Again the audience goes nuts cause we want to be noticed.

Actually it's an overdub. I'm pretty sure on the bootleg of that concert there isn't quite as an enthusiastic response. It does make it seem more exciting though.
David will know. He knows about these things. |

I think they just placed mics close to the audience and turned the volume up. The bootleg of the same show is from a soundboard so you never really hear the crowd anyway.
I think they did the same on Truth or Dare (Madonna doco) I've seen bootlegs where the crowd go wild but on all the pro shot versions you can't hear them, except on the concert footage captured on TOD. Does anyone with techinical knowledge know if I am right. |
