BEFORE
In 1977, Fleetwood Mac became soft-rock royalty with Rumours, which sold 8 million copies in its first year alone.

"I remember someone saying, 'God, you must be scared ****less! How are you going to follow up Rumours?'" guitarist Lindsey Buckingham recalled. His answer was to seek inspiration from new-wave acts such as the Clash and Talking Heads.

When Warner Bros. heard Tusk, "a lot of people saw their Christmas bonuses flying out the window," Buckingham said. Priced at $16, a lot of money in 1979, the double album failed to come close to Rumours' success. "Six months [after Tusk came out]," Buckingham added, "[drummer] Mick [Fleetwood] said, 'You blew it.'"

AFTER
The Mac recovered some commercial ground with their next record, 1982's Mirage, but would never match Rumours' sales.

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
"It's part of musicians' job description to follow idiosyncratic flights of fancy," Moby says. "Like the Beatles' Revolution #9' or Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Not that people rushed out to buy that, either."

it's tied with rumours as my favorite ... it's just too easy & specious to call it a disaster. i mean, have these people even listened to it? it does not belong on a list with mc hammer and mariah carey.

No - it should have been replaced with another of Mariah's albums (as they should all be on here)

my thoughts exactly. if someone says they don't like or 'understand" tusk, the first thing that comes to mind is that they probably haven't even listened to it.

I think in terms of Christine and Stevie, Tusk was one of their finest hours... Lindsey ... argh, Over My Head!!

So what would have happened if the next album had been a Rumours II, like Lindsey always swore it wouldn't?

ITA. Christine and Stevie's songs are great and definitely some of their best. Lindsey? ..... not so much. His stuff all basically sounds the same and after awhile become almost like cartoonish intermissions between the better Christine and Stevie material.
I realize Lindsey was avoiding "Rumours II" to the extreme but surely there was some gray area?
I'm just saying.....

Commercially,It was a risk at the time and a defiant one.
Sonically, nothing came close to it -- I though it sounded "expensive" then and I still do...the production is lush, just not in the way RUMOURS was.
It's a gorgeous album, through and through.

It's my favorite MAC album...
