On BBC radio 4 this morning there was an interview with rock'n'roll interviewer Sylvie Simmons (apparently well-known?) who told a short story about an interview with Stevie from back in the day. She didn't give the date but I think she said it was at Stevie's Marina Del Ray house so maybe some of you can pinpoint when that is.
It's interesting because she admits she didn't write a favourable report of Stevie in whatever magazine she was writing for.. for those who can't listen, she says she turned up at the house and there was a maid ironing all her chiffon, and a room full of stuffed toys which she initially mistook for taxidermy and was disappointed to find it was not. She didn't feel Stevie "was her kind of girl" and wrote as much. Then later at some point, backstage at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go, she said Stevie came up to her and said: "Silvie, we girls in rock have got to stick together", and then stalked off. This made her "feel about 1 inch tall". I love angry sassy Stevie, I don't know about you guys! If the woman had done 1 minute of research she would have realized the stuffed toys were from fans and were destined for charity shops. Ah, at least she admits she was young and foolish ![]() The link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b010dd43 |

She said she was going through a bratty stage and seems to regret what she wrote. She was just being a young, bratty rock critic. It didn't seem like Stevie was acting angry, seemed like she was perplexed.

this is why critics are useless. who cares what one person's opinion is? yet they make a living at it. report the facts and what you see and experience. don't just make judgements. and if you don't understand something (like why there is a room full of stuffed animals), ask Stevie, get the scoop. isn't that what she was there for? :s

I remember this article, it was actually great. It appeared in Creem magazine. The writer actually said that she didnt want to like Stevie, but she warmed up to her. She said Stevie was honest & that made up for alot of things-lol.
It's worth a read, I am not sure it is in the Blue Letter Archives or not. |
