I've had a few requests to start "like or dislike" threads over here (I've done several in the Stevie forum) so I'm doing it. Some thought the "like or dislike" title was stupid or silly, so now it's "discuss." Happy now? Probably not.

Please contribute a review of the song, as detailed or vague as you'd like. Of course, it would be great if people would go into details about music & lyrics, but feel free to post "it's a nice song" if you must. I do ask that we respect everyone's opinions - what you may love, another may loathe. It's all subjective, so let's keep that in mind. Please. Thanks.



I think that SHN is a perfect opener for the album. The starting guitar crescendo (is that the right term? I think so...) is so cool, and makes the song just bust wide open. I can't help but smile & I always want to start dancing around when it plays. Mick's drums are light & bouncy - I don't know how else to describe them. Love the beat of the cymbals. John's bass is quite understated - I actually have to think about it to hear it, which is not really a bad thing in this case. It wouldn't have sounded right if it were too heavy. It sounds pretty funky to my ears.

The harmonies are solid. Love when Stevie goes higher for "tossed around enough." My only complaint is that I don't hear Chris well. Is she not singing on this tune, or just not as prominently as other songs on the album? Or it's jusy me, perhaps? Can someone more knowledgable than me please advise?

For being a bit of a "f*ck you" song, it's pretty damned happy. I suppose LB wanted it to sound "I don't care, none of this is going to bring me down, whatever...." If that's what he wanted to do, he achieved it in my book. The lyrics are good, nothing too mean or heavy.

Anyone want to comment on the "tall grass" line? BTW - where did that theory come from? I mean, did LB ever mention the double entendre in an interview (I just realized I've no clue how to spell that) or did people just "get it?"

SHN song continues to rock live, IMO. Every SYW show I attended, people were up & dancing, myself included. But generally, I prefer the album version a bit more. And I prefer the officially released version over the one they gave us on the remaster.

I love Second Hand News. It's upbeat and lively and virtually impossible not to sing along with it. Plus, I love the "Why can't we just have sex and forget everything else?" vibe.

I think is a great opener for the album, it has rhythm, it's a nice song.. I used to love the song but... recently I don't know why I jump it to the following song (not necessarilly Dreams since I have my own records).

What you said here. Except I actually do start bouncing around. It's my best weekend "I just woke up and I'm happy" jumping around my house song. The only thing you left out was the fun of scringing (screaming and singing) "Dowdowdowdowduhdowduhdowdowdowbowduhdowdowdowdowdowdootdowduhdowdow(dootdoodlidoo)" or whichever consonant you choose.

It is short, sweet, simple perfection. I looove the drum beat.

The thing that always sticks with me about this song was reading an article in Crawdaddy magazine about the upcoming Fleetwood Mac album entitled Yesterday's Gone and the opening "untitled track with vaguely pornographic lyrics".

Well, you gotta remember, the Crawdaddy article came out a good 6 months or more before the album was released. The Rumours title was pretty much a last minute change. (As was Christine's change of the song from being the title cut to "Don't Stop") AND, considering that Lindsey wrote "Go Your Own Way" in 1975 and played it in concert for nearly a year before actually officially titling it. (Like it could have any OTHER title, Lindsey?) And, then there's "Brushes"...like "Never Going Back Again" wasn't going to be the title from the beginning?

But, then again, Bob Dylan DID title "that" song "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". So, maybe Lindsey was trying to NOT use the "obvious". But, then, he's no Dylan.

Whenever I go back to Rumours now this is the track I have to listen to. In the past it always played second fiddle to the other 'bigger' songs.

I agree it's a perfect opener for the album. Love everything about it.

Seriously though - I like it, and I included it on my best of Fleetwood Mac compilation, but the song I have heard once to many times to really get any more enjoyment out of it...

SHN is a great tune. All the right elements are there. And yet I rarely listen to it. Go Your Own Way is the only Lindsey song from Rumors I listen to with any regularity. Hmm.

im pretty sure she doesnt sing on second hand knews
but i know theres no pianos, & actually she played the chair (hehehe) instead, not sure again though if that was just in concert
so, sorry for the pretty vague contribution....

but i think its a great song! & beautiful harmonies! even if i would love to hear christine on it!
