Which of the Five Rumours-Era albums has dated the best?

Definately Tusk.

I too am gonna have to go with Tusk. Mirage and especially Tango tend to sound a little dated production-wise, as is the fate of most albums released in the 80s. Fleetwood Mac and Rumours meanwhile don't sound dated per se, but their sound is very clearly rooted in mid-70s California pop/rock. Tusk for all its weirdness simply sounds timeless, or at least from a time that doesn't really exist on our linear scale.

Tusk sounds the least dated. But even though Tango has not aged well (and possibly the most), I still have a soft spot for it.

Off topic, but of the three albums released in 1992 by Lindsey, John, and Mick, I'd say John's album has aged the best. "Shakin' The Cage" sounded dated within two years. Lindsey's album would probably have aged better if he would have used a real drummer. John's album was straight-forward and didn't take a lot of risks, and as a result, it sounds as good today as when it was released.

This is a great question! And not an easy answer. I'd say Rumours has dated the least. Even though Tusk is more innovative, and even though I like Tusk as much if not more, those twelve Rumors songs are still as perfectly suited to a pop-radio context as they were then. If "Dreams," for example were released this week instead of twenty-nine years ago, it would still probably crack the top ten.

I'd sure love to think so, too, but a glance at the top ten singles from this past week (including entries from Nelly, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, the Pussycat Dolls, Juelz Santana, D4L, Nickelback, The All-American Rejects and Mary J. Blige) makes me not so sure.

Good point. But you know, I've heard plenty of pop on the radio too: Kelly Clarkson, Bo Brice, Rob Thomas. FM's way better than any of these, but the soft-rock-with-a-kick thing is consistent with a good deal of radio programming. And only a couple years back, didn't the Coors strike it big with a cover of Dreams?

I was gonna vote, but so many people said "Tusk", I think I need to get to know Tusk a little better before I say anything I might regret later. I don't own Tusk, so I don't know a lot of the more obscure songs on it that well. It's high on that To Do list, though!!

I'm always surprised when folks who are fans of just the Rumours line-up don't own every one of those albums. I mean, come on, kids, there's only five of 'em! Throw in the two live ones and Say You Will and that makes eight, but this isn't like being a Bob Dylan or Neil Young or Elvis Costello or Tom Waits fan!

I agree, that is pretty sad.

I'm a fan of every line up...and have all of the albums.

Shakin the Cage sounds so dated!!! u r so right about this..
and LB's fairlight makes me cringe now

Though I prefer Tusk, it's hard to argue what Rumours has done for Fleetwood Mac's career.
