I think we have discussed before. Who determines how often to count sales and recertify? I find it hard to believe that Rumours has not sold a million more records since 2003. If it needs to be requested by the band, why wouldn't they have some of their stuff counted again?

Now that I read that stat from Amazon (which just started in 1995) saying that Rumours was a Top Ten best seller of all time in Amazon sales, then I'd definitely agree with you that the album has sold a few million more in recent years.

I think that the album sells a considerable amount of copies per year. Soundscan, which is active from 1991, traces record sales and all that stuff. I would like to know their actual sales, of all their albums.

The independent audit required to gain RIAA certification/recertification for an album has to be paid for by the label -- this can sometimes cost many thousands of dollars. If an artist isn't actively promoting a release at that time, the minimal additional press exposure for the certification may not be deemed a worthy expense by the label, which is probably why you haven't seen Rumours get recertified (and why Landslide hasn't been certified, etc.).

Sorry, I meant "platinum" certification -- it's no doubt sold 1,000,000 by now. IIRC, when it was audited for "gold" certification, it had already sold around 800k, and that was a few years ago.

Can someone please contact the RIAA or do something to get FM's and Stevie's albums and singles' certifications updated. 'Bella Donna' is AT LEAST 5xplatinum (currently 4x), the 1975 Fleetwood Mac album was certified 5xplatinum in 1986 and needs to be certified probably around 7xplatinum. I could name pretty much all of Stevie's and FM's catalogue but there are some definite updates that need to be done.

The Rumours reissue from last year hit #3 on the UK charts and spent 4 weeks in the top 20, so that's another chunk of sales. Most new artists would kill for 4 weeks in the top 20 these days.
The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac is currently celebrating it's 328th week in the UK album chart and is sat at #45. Rumours is up this week by 121 places to #60, having spent 282 weeks in the UK album chart. The Rumours reissue spent 6 weeks in the top 20 and 22 weeks in the top 75 (currently at #60). It also sold 168,000 copies in 2013 which was enough for it to feature on the year-end album list. The album is extremely close to achieving a 12xplatinum certification in the UK as it only needs to sell approximately 15,000 copies to reach 3.6 million in sales

The artists might have some pull if they cared about the numbers. How much pull do they have if they aren't under contract? And how many really believe the 40 million+ number for Rumours? Not I, said the cat. |

37 years after its release, it is the 59th best selling album in the US. Pretty spectacular.

I know I've already expressed my opinion about getting Stevie's and FM's albums and singles certifications' updated but 'Rumours' should DEFINITELY be certified 20xplatinum by now, or even higher....
