Stevie and John interview (1987)

This is wonderful and I never saw this before. This Tango era interview had Chris and Lindsey on the same couch interviewed and now it's Stevie and John. Stevie looks beautiful here almost off her Seven Wonders video. But gurl that dress is wearing you. Those puffy shoulders and the dress up to the chin makes her look like a villian from Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. Its the most ridiculous dress I have ever seen her in. But in 1987 that electric blue and puffy shoulders were all the rave. Look how long her nails are. Early 1987 and peak 80s fashion. The sad part is Stevie's eyes. You can see she is tranquilized and it makes you want to scream. The way Stevie sways back and forth during the interview is a sign of impairment. The most famous scene from these interviews is Stevie and Lindsey on the couch. She has an identical black dress on. It must of been buy one get one free. Gotta love the 80s. So glam.

And it's the same couch of the interview of Stevie, Mick and Rick I shared in other thread. I wonder how many artists have sat on it. They should interview it; I know that couch has a lot of stories to tell.

And yes, the dress looks funny, if not ridiculous, but it's the 80s fashion. It didn't remind me the characters you mention, but the extravaganza style that Alexis and Krystle sometimes used. Now we may say they often went too far, too.

She can hardly keep her eyes open, poor woman.
Is the tranquilliser causing the slight body swaying…maybe.

I think John looks cool in that laid back way of his.

The sad part is that she fell into that because of a doctor's prescription, to avoid the temptation to relapse into coke use, or so I read. It seems that the swaying is in time with her breathing, or maybe just my impression. But she answered fine, I mean I've seen people with the effects of clonazepam, and believe me, it's much worse. Also my friend from LA who saw the Mac in late 1987 told me that she performed very bad, like a zombie, barely reacting.

I wonder if she had seen a different doctor while/after recovering from cocaine addiction, who could have assured her of a healthier rehab, how different the story would have been. Like a butterfly effect since 1987? Probably many of the things that happened would have happened anyway. But others wouldn't have.

80s fashions were awful but I've seen worse than this dress lol.

And john was totally smoking hot around this time. I have this interview on audio tape but have never seen the video.

Stevie wore some wild s**t around this time in early 1987. She had this blue dress and an identical black dress that she wore during this same interview project. I suppose she could not decide between black and blue and someone decided to wear both. But maybe she or someone saw how ridiculous the dress looked and she changed to black. Her Big Love dress with all of the musical notes on it was very 80s too. They are so 80s glam and I remember how happy it was during this time. A FM album after 5 years and MTV was gearing up and the tour. It sort of all came crashing down in a few months. You can see they all just came off shooting those 3 videos because the all look so similar to how they were in the videos.

Early 80s weren't so bad... i think from 1983 on it got worse with thick shoulder pads, boxy jackets, big bulky styles etc. so unflattering.

The early 80s were conservative. Men cut their hair and even women were wearing shorter hair. It was a major clean up from the late 1970s. Mid 80s Madonna hit and styles got really loud. By the time the late 80s hit it was very glam, big hair, and loud colors.

One late 80s trend that I miss that only lasted about 2 years was the white washed denim. In the Tango live concert, Stevie has a white washed denim jacket on for Everywhere, correct? I remember in early 1988 my last year in high school I went to JC Penney and bought a white washed denim jacket. You would have thought I bought a new Ferrari. I was so proud of it and could not wait to wear it to high school the next day and got all the compliments. White washed denim was a fast trend. It started in 1986 and by late 1988 it was already crashing out. BTW, I also got a pair of matching white washed jeans.

wow you had the whole ensemble! the guy i had a crush on in HS had a whitewashed denim jacket w rolled up cuffs by the wrists. i thought he was the bomb w his longish scruffy hair.

i think by 86 the fluorescent stuff was in.. bright earrings that matched your top, weird slashes of colors on shirts or on our Nike high tops, lots of gel in the hair... i don't think i ever owned whitewashed jeans though lol

Physiatrists have a lot to answer for, when they prescribe drugs like Klonopin that have bad side effects.

Was it the same as "stone wash" jeans? That's how they called here, yes in english. And they said they were called that because it was inspired by how native americans washed clothes in the river. But some of them weren't whited; it was the same style, but the lighter parts had a greenish tint. I don't know if it was a faulty process from cheap brands or if they did it on purpose, but they looked really ugly to me.

Thats a good question. I had to use google to confirm my hunch. Stone washed jeans go way back. They were lighter and had a sort of worn in look to them. They were more comfortable to wear. White washed jeans was a fad that actually used acid or bleach to give a streaky and light white color on the denim. I suppose they are a tad similar but I remember buying stone washed jeans in the late 70s. White washed jeans and denim was a quick fad in the late 80s.

I would say stone washed jeans had a worn look to them and they were lighter denim and comfortable
White washed jeans take it to the next level with parts of denim being white and almost look like a tye-dye jeans in bleach or acid. It was not for comfort like stone washed it was strictly for a bolder look. White washed jeans were also known as acid washed jeans depending on where you lived. I think acid washed jeans is more proper. I grew up in Appalachia and we had different names for lots of things so I apologize for confusion.

Can't remember the quality, I don't know if they were lighter, I never bought one, about jeans I've always been a classic guy. Yes, perhaps some had a worn appearance that simulated a "rustic" look. But I'm pretty sure "stone wash" in Peru was a brief and temporary fad too, can't remember the exact year but it was mid 80s cause I was in college and some friends used them.

Thanks for sharing this, Macfan4life. While I agree the puffy sleeves and high collar do Stevie absolutely no favors, that color blue is stunning. If only she would wear something in another color now besides black.

I don’t think her swaying is related to Klonopin, anymore than I think John is slumped in the couch because he’s drunk. Both seem relaxed (lol) and maybe it is related to pills and alcohol, but I don’t watch this video and see two messed up rockstars. I’m sure I’m going to be accused of “FM and especially Stevie can do no wrong” but yeah, except for the horrible shape/cut of Stevie’s dress, I think they both look great here.
