Had Silver Springs been on Rumours would it have been the number one album of all time (in your opinion)?
Well, the reason I ask this is because-was it just the visual of stevie pointing her finger and tossing lindsey dirty looks that captured the essence of the song and made it so popular, or would it had been just as successful without the video and made rumours even more popular. I know there is really no way to answer this, but just your opinion. also, I almost posted this in stevie forum, but I knew everyone would say "of course!!! " teehee..and I wanted a more unbiased approach. I personally thought It probably would have since it has more to it than "I don't want to know" but just for sh*ts and giggles ![]() |

Have you ever heard the two live recordings of it from that era. It puts The Dance version to shame with the intensity. Oh for a video!!!!!

I think it would have been a hit, and I think Rumours would have sold just as many, if not more. Chicks love the whole "never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you" thing. ![]()

Before the album was released, "Silver Springs", despite being the single's "B-side", got nearly as much airplay as "Go Your Own Way". But, no, I don't think it would've changed sales numbers that much had it been included on the album. I mean, how much MORE popular could it have gotten? Even the band itself still thinks its their only album after nearly 30 years.
I DO think it was a shame (and borderline criminal) that it wasn't included on the original CD release of Rumours as a bonus track, though.

I think the album sold as much as it was ever going to sell. Everyone that would have ever considered purchasing 'Rumours' probably already did. But, if 'Silver Springs' had been released as a single, the band would probably have another hit under their belt....
Comment: I think "Silver Springs" is on of the greatest Fleetwood Mac songs ever, and my favourite Stevie song of all time ![]() |

I agree, it should have been on the original. Oh, the time lost...It certainly is an exceptional song.

{ahem!} It WAS ...but it was the "B-side". Now, if they would've marketed it a bit, maybe. Again, you have to remember that "hit radio" only played 3 (or shorter) minute songs..."Silver Springs" clocked in at over 5...and other than "Hey Jude", "American Pie", & "Light My Fire", there really haven't been "Hit singles" that were over 5 minutes in length. "Hey Jude" was the only one of the three that didn't get "edited", but the DJ would talk over and crossfade into the next song well before the song actually ended. So, there was a definite bias against those long songs...and then from a GIRL singer? Wasn't going to happen.

I didn't realise that B-Sides were considered 'singles'....

Well, you buy a single ( "the little record with the big hole" )...it has two sides...therefore, both sides are the single. Only radio programmers and promotion people decide what the "A" & "B" sides are. I would have bet that had "Silver Springs" been on the album, the "Go Your Own Way"/"Silver Springs" single would've been classified as a "Double A" side single (in the same way that The Beatles "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" single and "Something"/"Come Together" singles were) and both songs would've continued to get massive airplay. When the album came out WITHOUT "Silver Springs", that killed its airplay (why promote a song that isn't on the album?) and "Go Your Own Way" continued to get double the airplay after that.

I don't consider a B-side a single either. And when GYOW charted I'm pretty certain chart rundowns only mentioned GYOW and not the song on the flipside.
