Question eBay Autographs and their authenticity?

Pre-prints and copies aside, are the autographs sold on eBay authentic or are they by and large not worth spending money on? Is it a bit hit and miss? And if a Certificate Of Autheniticy is issued, what good is it or what does it state?

I got some signed LPs and it just set me thinking about it ...

Just curious.

To be honest with you Certificate Of Autheniticy are meaningless. Anyone can make one of these. Really the only way to guarantee an autograph is legit is to be there when it is written

I often suspected that...

It seems to me that the certificates usually accompany the WORST attempts at faking autographs.

99.99% of them are fake. I've gathered several celeb autos in person, and when I see "authentic" stuff on ebay the signatures look NOTHING like the ones I have. Generally, a person's handwriting does not change after you're in your teens. The ones of the Mac I've seen on ebay are pathetic...among many of the celebs I've personally met and had them sign things.

Well, I have a NASCAR collectibles store and have met several drivers and have MANY autographs and I have found that yes, the majority of the supposedly signed items on ebay with a C.O.A. is really B.S., sometimes I want to email these people and tell them off, but I don't. I probably have about 30 items signed by one particular driver and it really pisses me off that people are faking these signatures.

with any celebs. I've met and gotten autos from all these people: Michael Keaton, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie, Christopher Lee, Bruce Campbell, Mark Hamill, Glenn Close, Adam West, Tori Amos, Jeff Smith...and 99% of the autos I've seen on eBay never come close to the way the autos look that I have. Before I met Christopher Lee, I had the the ChristopherLeeWeb.com flat out accuse one ebay seller of fraud! Mr. Lee's son-in-law runs the website and just blatantly ratted the seller out.

once met NASCAR driver Ken Schrader at a local track where he was doing a meet-and-greet for fans and she was able to get me his autograph...But to prove it was the real thing she took his picture as he signed the paper, So no COA was needed.

Well, I have one autographed Fleetwood Mac item I bought from this guy named Stephen Duncan in California. It had all 5 band members signatures on it, and he listed on the back of the coa he sent me the dates and places he personally got the autographs. I checked, and the band members were all where he said they were on the dates he listed. So I dont know, I'd like to think thats pretty good proof, but who knows?

But all anyone would have to do is look up the tourdates on Pollstar, HERE, Sticketbastard, etc. You know?

All this is fairly disappointing ... particularly considering the money I paid ... Ah well, live and learn I guess. They still look nice I guess!

By the way, I've been meaning to ask you this, Livia .... that rhinestone-wheelchair quote on your sig has had me in stitches for AGES. Did she really say that?! There was a bit before that too
