It's not a guitar. It's a Coral Electric Sitar. (now made by Jerry Jones)

Jerry Jones Guitars-Coral Electric Sitar

You can hear one prominently in Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" and Steely Dan's "Do It Again".

Well, since he was pictured in The Chain box's booklet playing a REAL sitar, I assumed that it WAS a real sitar on "Make Me A Mask", but it could've been a Coral Electric, instead.

Yep, there could've been one in the background on the two "Play In The Rain" tracks on Go Insane.

Other than those, I haven't CONSCIOUSLY heard anything close to a Coral's sound on any other tune. I'll have to listen with headphones in the next few months and see if I can hear it anywhere.

Here I go sticking my neck out again, but...

What actually makes the Coral a sitar if it has fixed frets?

Is it just that it has sympathetic strings?

It's just CALLED a "sitar" because that's the sound it emulates (the 6 "guitar" strings are muted by a special bridge, and yes, the sympathetic strings)

In actuality, it IS just an electric guitar with sympathetic strings.

Actually.. I think it's from one of the articles promoting Go Insane, so I would say 1984..
