Post The Dallas Austin Lost Tracks........

OK, I was thinking the other day about what might have happened to these songs....

I really think one of them is floating around....In an outtake from Sheryl Crow's "C'mon, C'mon" album, there is a song called "You're not the one", which Stevie gave to Sheryl. When you listen to this song, there is some definite R & B influence there...I always found it kind of wierd that something like that could come off of Sheryl. Could this possibly be one of those tracks? Obviously re-worked of course....

Any other possiblities?

That's a good question. You're Not The One definitely has an R&B flava to it. Could be one of the Dallas Austin songs.

Where can I find YNTO online? I haven't heard it in awhile.

I always wondered why that song had a particular R & B feel to it, and it just makes perfect sense....Stevie didn't use it for Shangri-La and offered it to her friend Sheryl. Sheryl just kept the R & B feel......Wasn't there another producer she worked with as well? Rodney Jerkins....I think.

Interesting suggestion... Who ended up getting production credit on Sheryl's version? Just her?
I really wish those Dallas Austin tracks would surface sometime.

Did some digging and found these articles:

Dallas Austin discusses working with Stevie Nicks
as seen on MTV News

When super producer and Grammy Award nominee Dallas Austin isn't busy working with TLC, these days he's stretching his versatile skills with such acts as the Spice Girls and Stevie Nicks.
Nicks approached Austin about working on her new solo album, "Trouble In Shangri-La," after hearing his work on TLC's "Unpretty" single and when original producer Sheryl Crow was forced to drop out of the project because of a scheduling conflict.
MTV News recently caught up with Austin, who also handled production work on the Goodie M.O.B.'s new album, "World Party," and discussed how Nicks approached him about working on what will be her first new solo effort in seven years.
"Sheryl Crow actually started [producing the album] first," Austin said. "I came in [when] I think Sheryl had to go on the road and Stevie was in Hawaii one day and she put on the TLC record. [I've heard] she said 'Hey, this is the guy. I need to find this guy. He could do a lot of stuff. It sounds like [certain] Fleetwood Mac influences.'"
"So I finally went out to meet with her," he continued, "and Sheryl had done two songs, but I'm not sure if she's gonna finish them, or if Stevie's gonna finish them, or how it's gonna work, but the songs she did sounded great also."
Stevie Nicks is continuing to work on "Trouble In Shangri-La," which is slated to drop later this year.

How Stevie got her groove back
from Newswire

Singer Stevie Nicks had recorded songs with producer Sheryl Crow for her upcoming new CD, Trouble in Shangri-La, but now Nicks may be aiming for the R&B/hip-hop kids, reports Entertainment Weekly.
While in Hawaii, Nicks listened to TLC's current CD Fan Mail and noted how the single Unpretty resembled Fleetwood Mac's lush vocal style. "I've got to get the guy who produced this to produce my next album," she reportedly said.
The guy is Dallas Austin, known for his work with TLC, Madonna and Brandy. He says even old '70s Fleetwood Mac tunes like Nicks' Rhiannon and Dreams have a R&B groove running through them.
Nicks' CD is due in 2000. No word on whether the Crow-produced tracks will surface. "

Oh the Crow tracks surfaced. The Austin tracks didn't, LOL. Wonder what his version of Bombay Sapphires sounded like?

A Dallas Austin quote.....I guess this pretty much shows how different they were...

It's funny, in working with Stevie Nicks, I asked her, "So do you want me to fly your guys' vocals, or do you guys sing them down?" And she was like, "Fly 'em ?" She was like, "No, we just go in there, all three of us at once, and we'll sing 'em all the way down, and go in and do the other parts. And we'll stack 'em at that point, or something." And I said, "Oh, that's cool." And they was like, "But you guys fly them down?" and I was like, "Yeah, we take eight bars in and move those through the song, and that takes us five minutes. They've been recording and performing since '78. I've been learning. I was eight years old trying to figure it out. So just the difference in my technique and her technique, or Fleetwood Mac's technique, is really interesting, and it's working really great.

I can't ever imagine La Nicks letting anyone "fly" her vocals. That might be one reason why the Austin collaboration didn't work out.

I know - but I think she liked working with him. Interestingly, in the Bella Donna master reels we have heard, Stevie definitely is singing the entire thing. There is no flying of anything, which was sort of possible then even at that level of sophistication. Now, some singers just sing the words in a disjointed fashion and they lace them together. This is a tribute to Stevie and her voice.

Yes, the Bella Donna reels that have surfaced are testament to Stevie's vocal talent and abilities. She sang those takes over and over. I think The Dealer had sixteen takes and that was just in one session.

In a "just missed the boat twist of fate" a friend of mine was working in an LA studio when Stevie was in there with Dallas. She described the way Stevie redid the vocal booth, and all the other Stevie things that happened. Then, she tells me that while she was working, they were doing playback over the house PA - basically the music in the lobby, etc. Of course, I am rabidly asking for the song title, what it was like, etc. She wasn't really a fan, and could only tell me that it sounded like Stevie and she liked it. She tried to call me when she was hearing the stuff on the house PA and I was out of town. And it was 2 in the morning....then of course, the sessions ended. A very near miss.
From what she relayed, the sessions did not go smoothly, and they had very different ways of recording. There were many master tapes messengered through assistants back and forth, and people only speaking through assistants and managers. Personally, they appeared to like each other, but professionally and artisitically, they were not on the same page. It would be interesting to hear the results.
