Very sad. My only experience with him was when I talked with him on the phone back in 1990 or so (when a Model 1 cost maybe $2K new) and he sent me an 8X12 gloss B&W photo of a Model 1 and some literature. He told a few great stories about Alembic and making the guitar for Lindsey. Really good dude.
Keep in mind this was before the interwebs and I thought Lindsey was maybe playing an Alembic (which I'd figured out from a guitar/bass book I had). Alembic told me Rick had moved on and gave me his number. God I miss the late '80s/early '90s.
