It's also a sure way to cut sales. Look at what happened to Springsteen when he launched two records on the same day about a decade ago. Same with Guns 'n Roses. And, hey, go back to Tusk. Had it been a 12-song record, it probably would have sold more.
While Tusk is a tremendous album with only a couple of stinkers, other double albums (or simultaneous releases) usually result from an artist's over-indulgent failure to self edit. And the buying public tends to react negatively to that.
However, I can think of instances in which the artist used up most of a CD's space with hidden tracks and so forth, but the release didn't cost any more than your average CD.
