Sacred Cows - The Beatles, 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'

Everyone knows how important The Beatles are. Anyone who doesn’t recognise it is just being contrary. With that, everyone knows about the gigantic cultural impact of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.It turned music upside down. Rock musicians looked at it and thought, ‘Wow! There’s life beyond trad rock instruments! We can look beyond the blues as a blueprint!’ It ushered in a new way of thinking for bands – for the first time, they didn’t have to worry about recreating things live. The studio was an adventure playground to be explored. The world was the songwriter’s oyster.

David Bedford, author of Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles, grew up in The Dingle, by the bottom of Madryn Street where Ringo was born, and attended St. Silas School from 1969, where Ringo had gone to school. All week, we’ll be looking at some interesting stories and factoids about specific songs. So let’s start episode #1 with “Dear Prudence.”

Beatle Ringo encourages us to save water

Ringo Starr formally opened the WaterAid garden at the Chelsea Flower Show and used the opportunity to take a swipe at the water companies who, in failing to fix leaks, allow water to go to waste. The former Beatle who has been associated with WaterAid since 2003 said: "In this country, we take water for granted - the water companies just let it leak away. It’s shameful. In many parts of the world one bucket of clean water can keep a family going for two days."
