Big difference. Carole King was a staff songwriter who later became a solo artist.

The Curtis Bros. didn’t write “Blue Letter” for Buckingham Nicks or Fleetwood Mac. They wrote it for their band and always intended to release their own version. They happened to be recording at Sound City and Fleetwood Mac liked the song.

You’re making way too much of this. Stevie’s cover of Free Fallin’ was part of her solo portfolio. She recorded and released it. End of discussion for me.
