Even small-time bands that play in clubs & casinos prerecord their tracks & their harmonies. They can't afford to hire backing musicians (like Fleetwood Mac) but they still want everything to sound "perfect"--& so do their buyers.

So true. Firstly, it's sad how the days of a 3 or 4 piece band, are gone. Even the crappy little bands I sometimes do sound for, are now 6 or 7 piece bands. And the bigger acts I do sound for, used to be 20 or so inputs...now, it's nothing for them to be 35-40 inputs. Less is more? Not these days.
And yes, on the playing with tracks. One hugely popular 80's "metal" cover band, that I do sound for,(I lightly use the term "metal", because they play tons of Bon Jovi, Journey, and Whitesnake - all singalong stuff), plays along to vocal tracks(all the high harmonies) and keyboard tracks(because the keyboard player owns the band, and gets too drunk to play the parts live).
