I completely agree with that While OOTC is a huge exception, his other solo albums are a mess of craziness. While i do completely agree with the fact that he is a musical genius, he needs La Nicks and Chris to bring out the best of that genius.

BTW, i just thought of somebody who should've been on that list: Brian Wilson. Like Bucky, he was a mad genius, but when he went at it without the Beach Boys, he came out with some very strange stuff.

I think even Bucky himself could agree that Surfs Up, even with the Beach Boy's backing, was far beyond any of their other albums. It was a mismatch of ideas that only really worked if you failed to take notice of this. You get the feeling that the songs are meant to work independenly, but place them together and it's disjointed. Although, having said that, Don't Go Near The Water and Long Promised Road do flow into each other perfectly. But that's where that phenomena ends.
