Explain further, David...how did their harmonies differ from the Beatles' (for example, "Because" on Abbey Road) & the Beach Boys' (well, just pick any)??

To me, their harmonies were just culled from those influences (as well as the Every Brothers)

Don't get how their harmonies were "new for rock at the time".
