I think it really depends what you're looking for in a school. What you want to study, what kind of campus you want, how many students, etc.
I went to a fairly small liberal arts college (Marist) and that was perfect for me. I'm glad I chose NOT to go to a school that had a huge student body. I knew pretty much everyone in my major and I was really involved on campus in the student government. I also was able to live in campus housing all four years and be physically ON the campus, less than five minutes from all the classroom buildings, which was perfect for me.
I also think it's kind of important to get an idea of what you want before you start applying. There's no point in applying to schools that you don't really see yourself going to or don't have the programs you want. I had a fairly good idea of what I was looking for and instead of making the decision harder for myself by applying to any school that fit into those specifics, I chose a small handful. I think that really eases up the application process as well as the waiting and seeing process. I ultimately ended up applying to a few "categories" of schools and when I heard back, it really made deciding which to attend much easier.
