I think Lindsey's aura and attitude on the BN cover is a little less generic than on
Law and Order. I agree with you about the facial hair or the big hair in general. He often seems buried in it. In fact, some of the earlier high school pictures of him look more like "Lindsey" than those early seventies photos do to me.
But this probably has a lot to do with the photos being in black and white. If they had been in color and his eyes had still been distinctive, then those hirsute pictures probably would have reminded me a lot more of the man we know today, even with all the hair.
