I realize he was sending a message to Dexter, yet Trinity could've beaten Rita to death, or shot her, or dismembered her body as Dexter witnessed with his own mother. It wasn't mentioned but Trinity was probably someone with OCD, and had to kill Rita in the same ritual as all of his second murders in his pattern. She had to die in the bathtub.
Speaking of Julie Benz, who played Rita on Dexter, I've been re-watching old episodes of "Sliders" (Netflix). She appears in an episode during the third season (1996), and she doesn't look that much different today. "Middle-aged mother" is a harsh term to use for her.
