My hunch is that the piano on "Songbird" was recorded separately from the lead vocal at that auditorium in Berkeley. I guess it's possible, too, based on Richard's comment, that even the acoustic guitar was recorded separately on that one.

I remember this article from a couple of years ago. Those were my two biggest questions too... why the immediate departure from Keith? He seemed so instrumental in getting Richard, Lindsey, and Stevie all set up in the music business... and just as they're all starting to make it, poof!
I've always been skeptical about Christine's saying "Songbird" was recorded in one take as well. I know she said she spent the whole night at Zellerbach because she had to get it in one take... but I bet that doesn't necessarily include the vocal. If any of the Rumours songs sound like they have a live vocal, this is it... but I can't imagine getting the piano track and vocal all in one shot, especially after pounding through the song for 8 or 10 hours straight.
