Well, I guess it's like people who might swear on the lives of their children. I wouldn't do something like that, but I've heard others do it.
The thing I always wondered was why Stevie swore on her mother's grave and not her dad's. I always thought she liked him better. It seemed kind of suspicious to me, like she just swore on her mother's to hedge her bets. She knew he didn't have long at the time. Made me laugh to think about how she carefully omitted him.
