Okay David, I'm gonna bounce ideas off of you.
So, I'm gonna guess that Lindsey and Mick's "spark" was lost when Stevie lost her own interest and enthusiasm for the song. If we so wish, we can blame this on the "Klonopin years"... I don't know what made the change, but it definitely happened. So then The Dance came along and Stevie's voice wasn't nearly what it was in "Rhiannon"s prime years so they tried the eerie, slower approach to the song. I actually think it was pretty well performed during 1997 but there was something about the tension in Stevie's "dreams unwind" that kept the song intact. Now that she's lost even more power and range, the song is pretty dead, plain and simple.
SO, I think that Lindsey and Mick should put more energy into the song and add that guitar solo again. If they make the shifts in the song more prominent, it'll automatically transfer to a better performance onstage. In my dream world, Fleetwood Mac would take another Stevie song out of the setlist ("Stand Back", the ballad, whatever) and give "Rhiannon" the time and energy it deserves. One less song means a few more minutes for that buildup towards the end and a little bit more energy for Stevie's performance and voice.
I would cry of happiness if "Rhiannon" became worthwhile again. Seriously.
