It does depend on where you sit, but that doesn't necessarily mean proximity. I think 2 people in the front row can have different sound experiences depending on where they are located in relationship to the speakers.
One night I went and my ears were ringing well into the next day and my friend was going with me to Staples and I don't think he'd been to a concert since The Carpenters in the seventies. So, I thought he would have an awful time with the sound and I warned him to bring ear plugs, but at Staples the sound was great and not painful at all, even though we were in front row and closer than I had been when I had the bad experience.
