It's funny, you say that Lindsey shouldn't be experimental but it was his being experimental that led to Fleetwood Mac's most critically acclaimed album, "Tusk", being widely considered to be their best album. Not their most popular, their BEST. At the time is was considered a failure because it only sold 4 million copies. Since when is selling 4 million copies a failure? I guess that album wasn't relevant.
As for putting out albums every 6 years, I don't think anyone will forget them. Fleetwood Mac hadn't had an album out since 1997 when they released "Say You Will". People bought it, and bought tickets to the shows. They weren't forgotten.
The Rolling Stones put out albums every 5 or 6 years and they still sell out Stadiums. But they're not relevant. They don't get records in the charts anymore. In fact, the Stones have never been a big record selling band. They're known more for their live show. And they are still one of those most influential bands of all time.
As for some music from the 80's now being considered classic, that is true. But guess what, half of those 80's songs were by 1 hit wonders who nobody can name. They just know the song. How many of those 80's bands are in the Hall of Fame? Not many. If Lady Gaga takes that route I guess that makes her an important artist of our times. But she'll never be in the Hall of Fame. That I know.
