LET'S GET DIGITAL

Confession time: We're not really into the whole MP3 player thing.

Oh, sure, we've stuffed our little non-Apple brand device with all kinds of goodies, slopping together waves of delicious '80s cheese (Kajagoogoo, Murray Head), classic hip-hop (3rd Bass, Ice-T) and psych-pop (Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Soft Boys) with way, way too many Guided By Voices tunes.

Still, when we crank tunes in the car, it's purely CDs. We want the actual albums. Want to hold them in our hands. Yep, we're old.

But we realize that carrying around 30 CDs in your car will lead them to get scratched, which leads to skips, which leads to you replacing your muffed-up CDs. And we realize that someday soon CDs will be gone.

In that spirit, we picked three sick tunes by three artists playing in the Philadelphia area this week that, you know, you should add to your MP3 player.

Or, if you're us, throw it on a mix CD.

1) "Countdown," by Lindsey Buckingham (off "Out Of The Cradle," 1992)
We realize that Lindsey Buckingham, lead axeman and singer-songwriter for Fleetwood Mac, can sometimes appear to be somewhat of a turd.

That smug, scrunched-face look he flashes when he's ripping the solo to, say, "Go Your Own Way." The creepy way he lurched and leered at Stevie Nicks during "Landslide" after the band reunited in the late 1990s. The fact that it took him five years to record his first post-Mac solo album, "Out of The Cradle."

Yet it was that pretty decent album (which we own on cassette) that produced the almost irresistible lead single "Countdown," a bouncing pop track led by a pretty rocking lead guitar run that's also packed with beautiful Beach Boy babble ("ba-ba-ba") and a big shout-chorus refrain.

Buckingham is currently operating outside of the Fleetwood Mac umbrella while he tours in support of his new album, "Gift of Screws" (which boasts the decent single, "Did You Miss Me." Hey, the guy can write tunes.)

He'll be at the Keswick Theater, 291 N. Keswick Ave., Glenside, Pa., at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $35 and $45, available at www. keswicktheatre.com (Online ticket buyers will receive a complimentary copy of "Gift of Screws" for every pair of tickets purchased).
Wow, Michele, you beat me to the punch, but you saved me from having to post it. How did you come upon this in CA? This was in my local newspaper. Yeah, I kind of was taken aback seeing this guy call our Lindsey "somewhat of a turd" but "Hey, the guy can write tunes". I still can't decide if this guy really liked Lindsey or what.
