Often it's a matter of convenience. It's very reasonable for very famous people to co-mingle by virtue of the fact that typically normal situations to meet people are not available to them. They don't, and often can't operate in normal societal circles.
That said, I do have a friend who, years ago, hooked up (from online) with a Madonna's brother, and had no idea who he was at first! Granted, Madonna's brother is no Chris Nicks!!
