I get chills just thinking about the Ark of the Covenant in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
The scene in question always reminds me of the extraordinary part in Exodus:
And unto Moses He said: 'Come up unto the LORD, thou, & Aaron, Nadab, & Abihu, & seventy of the elders of Israel; & worship ye afar off; & Moses alone shall come near unto the LORD; but they shall not come near; neither shall the people go up with him.' [Exodus 24:1-2]
But what happens? The uncanny -- the awesome -- happens:
Then went up Moses, & Aaron, Nadab, & Abihu, & seventy of the elders of Israel; & they saw the God of Israel; & there was under His feet the like of a paved work of sapphire stone, & the like of the very heaven for clearness. And upon the nobles of the children of Israel He laid not His hand; & they beheld God, & did eat & drink. [Exodus 24:9-11]
Earlier in Exodus, threats are made & boundaries drawn:
And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, & many of them perish. And let the priests also, that come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.' And Moses said unto the LORD: 'The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for thou didst charge us, saying: Set bounds about the mount, & sanctify it.' And the LORD said unto him: 'Go, get thee down, & thou shalt come up, thou, & Aaron with thee; but let not the priests & the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest He break forth upon them.' [Exodus 19:21-25]
