The changes in Lindsey's voice have been pretty gradual, so I really can't say it was the smoking. Listen to Go Your Own Way from the
Mirage tour, the
Cradle tour, and
The Dance. The biggest change, to my ears, was between 1993 and 1998. It's gotten worse since. He smoked for years, and his voice changed little. He became a dad, and his voice changed a lot. Also, they're all getting older, which also impacts the voice.
I don't think the changes in vocals can be soley blamed on smoking. It didn't help, but Christine and Lindsey smoked, and their voices did not change too drastically. I think Stevie trying to be Janis on "Rhiannon" for all those years is about 90% of why her voice changed so drastically compared to the others. Actually, I think the "Tusk" through "Mirage" era was her best, and I think I'd like her current voice more if she tried her hand at blues or jazz. But, her early voice (Fritz and some of the live Buckingham Nicks) could be annoying, IMO.
