I don’t use ear buds, I don’t enjoy music that way, even on a long trip (like on a train or plane). I have to be in my car and on the go. Anyway, I’m using a tape adapter, which is really the only other way to use an iPod in the car aside from the radio adapter thing (which totally sucks.) Most have said that a tape adapter is better than the FM radio adapter cuz at least you won’t get interference but even still, by no means is this better than listening to a CD or even a cassette tape, you lose so much quality. Even if I make a CD form iTunes using mp3s, even that sounds better. I just don’t understand why people would sacrifice quality over quantity. What good is it if the sound kind of sucks? In any event, I’m probably going to hold onto it. It could be good for long road trips. Some CDs I save as pure wav files (like the Mirage CD for example – the input level on that one is abysmal so imagine importing that as mp3 then importing that to iPod – YUCK), so some I save as wav files and I kick up on the volume a few notches in the “options” sections in my library and it’s not so bad. But it’s a lot of playing around with the settings just to get the music to sound halfway decent. Just put in a damn CD for pete’s sake – problem solved.

It's all about the bitrate of your source MP3 or FLAC files. A low bitrate file will sound bad using any device. I personally rip everything at minimally 192 Kbps, which is higher than the standard 128 kbps you would typically download. Also, the headphones make a world of difference; you definitely get what you pay for.
