Yeah. She said she started smoking in 1984, when she was in between producers for RAL and stuck in Phoenix, bored out of her mind. According to her she smoked her last cigarette on New Year's Eve 1996, but multiple fans have seen her light up one during, for instance, soundchecks. So I don't think she ever
really quit, but she probably went down from those two packs a day.

I always understood it to be that they were straight-up dropped from Polydor's label. Given all the talk they've done about how they were "struggling to make ends meet", and Stevie was cleaning Olsen's house, I would doubt that they had a paying contract with a label at all after they were dropped.

That's what I think also. I think they were allowed to use the studio as an indulgence, not because they had a recording contract. They were probably going to shop around for one again once the tracks were finished.
