I don't believe in anything supernatural, nor do I subscribe to any religious dogma that man created in order to explain things/concepts that they couldn't understand or answer for at the time that the dogma was created.
With that said-
If I were the family from this thread, I would have had a private gathering honoring his life without considering sanction from some religious institution.
