They are still saving a bundle. If it costs them $500 a month less to live far out and gas is $.50 more a gallon than it ought to be and they buy 80 gallons of gas (four 20 gallon fill ups) a month, they are spending only -- That is only $40 more a month. So, that pretty much is a mostly insignificant increase considering the cheaper rent and that groceries and staples generally are cheaper in the burbs.
That also assumes all the 80 gallons are going for the commute, which likely is untrue -- and a car that gets around 15 MPG -- If you get a car that gets 30 MPG, you'd be better off on that $40.
