Yeah, clearly most people aren't able to give up their cars. Public transportation in this country is awful, with a few notable exceptions. There's a great article in a recent New Yorker about long commutes and how, in most cases, jobs aren't located near where people live.
In the Bay Area, many people commute a couple of hours so that they can buy a house or having cheaper living way out in the far suburbs. I wonder, though, how much they are really saving when you add in the price of gas. They certainly aren't enjoying quality of life by sitting in a car for 2-4 hours per day.
