In case anyone is curious, to know something about Iran from a different perspective, there's also their art. Actually in America is going to debut Offside by one of their best directors,
Jafar Panahi. Some other fantastic filmakers they have are:
Mohsen Makhmalbaf; the greatest,
Abbas Kiarostami. There are also some very interesting women directors like
Samira Makhmalbaf and
Niki Karimi, who just made a beautiful movie about how difficult can be to have a career (the leading character is a successful publicist) and a private life
All these filmakers aren't loved by government but since they tend to win tons of awards, censorship leaves them more space to work .
Their cinema has often a neorealistic style so they usually show everyday life, but some of them like Panahi like to change fro drama to comedy. Then there's a quite frequent surreal and oniric vein in some of their films.
