I think the dreams are the songs and she knew, or was beginning to know, that she was the break out star and his songs were not the hits. In other words he needed her just as she needed him to craft her songs. Dreams, to me, is a very complex song put into rather horrifyingly few lines of poetry.
I also think that LB and La Nicks did not just have one break up in that time period. I think there were many.
