I actually like sad endings in novels (but not so much in movies, go figure). If a book makes me cry, I consider that a good thing. I guess I'm not so much into the escapist part of reading. I mean... things don't always work out in real life, so why the hell should they do so in fiction? On the other hand, people who read my work always complain that they "don't like" or "don't get" my endings, so what the hell do I know?
