Well, maybe a little. Actually he's probably more Italian. Joaq's Puerto Rican, I believe.
Really though, the book is about f*cked up relationships. None of the relationships between the characters in it are really healthy (the relationship between the protagonist and the hotter-than-hell guy isn't the only abusive one) and it's not exactly an uplifting read.
Though I have been told by certain readers that while it doesn't lift the spirit, it does "lift" another part of the body...
