HomerMcVie put it so wonderfully. I worked at a hospice residence for a year and witnessed many passings. Being that I am a very spiritual person... to me, it is not so much about saying "goodbye" as it is "see you again". No matter what happens, I believe the spirit remains with us.
I know this probably doesn't really help but do know that you and your family are in my prayers. Peace be with you all during this time.
