I think the specific "callow" quality noted by the RS reviewer in 1975 was the slightly Bonnie Tylerish gin wobble in the back of Stevie's throat. i don't know where that came from--she didn't do it on her 1973 album & she didn't do it on Rumours in 1977. It sounded sorta like an older gal with throat cancer.
